I think my instinct is to be kind to others, but I don't really know if this springs from a sense of the holiness of relationships (as Jesus seems to be commending) or from some less noble desire to be liked. In any case, I am less consistent about loving when it's tough. The targets listed in Matthew aren't easy people to encounter ... I'm more ready to "love" people who decorate my life rather than blot it. Prayer for today is to watch all my encounters with people and see them as Jesus!
